Privacy Policy

TrueNorthMarket is a small, independently run directory of Canadian-owned businesses. This page explains what information we collect and why, in plain language.

What we collect

• Account information. If you sign up to list a business, we collect the email and password you provide (your password is handled entirely by our authentication provider, Supabase, and never stored or seen by us in plain text).
• Listing information. If you list a business, we store what you submit — business name, website, description, category, city/province, tags, and logo image.
• Approximate location. When you list a business, we record the country your request came from (via a header our hosting provider, Vercel, supplies) as a light, non-blocking signal alongside your own Canadian-ownership confirmation. We don't collect or store precise location or IP addresses ourselves.
• Bot/spam protection. Sign-up and report forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to block automated abuse. Cloudflare processes your IP address for this purpose under its own privacy policy.
• Traffic analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand how many people visit the site and which pages are popular. It's cookie-free and doesn't identify individual visitors.

How we use it

To run the directory: create and manage your account, publish and display business listings, send account-related emails (confirmation, password reset) through our email provider, prevent spam and abuse, and understand traffic at a high level so we can improve the site. We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.

Who else sees it

We rely on a few outside services to run the site, each processing data under their own privacy policy: Supabase (database, authentication, and file storage), Vercel (hosting and analytics), and Cloudflare (bot protection). Business listing details you publish (name, description, website, city/province, logo) are shown publicly on the site by design — that's the point of a directory.

Your account, your control

You can edit or delete your business listing, or permanently delete your account and all associated data, any time from your dashboard. Deleting your account removes your listing immediately.

Cookies

We use one essential cookie (set by Supabase) to keep you signed in. We don't use tracking or advertising cookies.

Listing a business

TrueNorthMarket is meant for genuinely Canadian-owned businesses. When you list a business, you're confirming it's Canadian-owned and that the information you provide is accurate. We don't independently verify every listing — we rely on this self-attestation plus community reports. Anyone can report a listing that looks wrong, and we review reports and remove listings that don't belong.

Acceptable use

Don't use the site to submit false, spam, or fraudulent listings; attempt to disrupt or abuse the service; or violate anyone else's rights. We can remove content or suspend accounts that violate these terms.

No warranty

The site and its listings are provided “as is.” We don't guarantee the accuracy of any listing's Canadian-ownership claim, availability of the site, or fitness for any particular purpose. Use your own judgment when contacting or purchasing from listed businesses.

Changes

We may update this page as the site evolves. We'll update the date at the top when we do. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the update.
